Check Schedule 20 Steel Pipe Dimensions, Thickness in mm & Pressure rating
Steel pipes are produced according to various international standards, with each grade further classified into schedules that specify their physical characteristics. Schedule 30 steel pipes are a type of low-pressure pipe commonly used in applications with mild pressure requirements. These pipes have a weight range from 0.32 kg to 351.7 kg per meter, depending on their size, which typically ranges from 1.8 inches to 36 inches in diameter. For a pipe to be classified as Schedule 30, its wall thickness must meet the specifications outlined in the schedule.
For instance, as per the Schedule 30 pipe chart, a 3-inch pipe with an outer diameter of 88.9 mm and a wall thickness of 4.78 mm weighs approximately 9.92 kg per meter. Meanwhile, a 10-inch pipe with a 273 mm outer diameter and 7.8 mm wall thickness will weigh about 51.03 kg per meter. The combination of pipe size and wall thickness directly affects its pressure rating, with Schedule 30 pipe thicknesses ranging from 1.45 mm to 15.88 mm. Pipes with thicker walls and smaller diameters generally offer higher pressure ratings.
Schedule 30 steel pipes are ideal for medium to low-pressure applications where high-pressure pipes are not necessary. They are valued for their durability and toughness, although they have lower impact strength compared to higher-schedule pipes. These pipes are widely used in water and gas transportation, as well as in underground piping systems for towns and cities.
